The International Association for Enterprise Promotion was launched in 2009. Its objective is to promote learning and sharing internationally by all those engaged in enterprise promotion - including business advisers, coaches, consultants, counsellors, educators, financiers, mentors and trainers - and who have an interest in encouraging and supporting people to start and grow a business.

Its first event was the inaugral International Enterprise Promotion Convention which showcased best practice and innovation in the creation and support of small businesses world-wide and was a unique opportunity for all to promote their own successes and to network with like-minded specialists in SME creation and development. Copies of the presentations from the 2009 Convention are available to download from the Enterprise Promotion website.

This site has been set up to enable all those with an interest in enterprise promotion, particularly convention participants and speakers, to engage with each other and to share ideas, lessons and knowledge on a continuing basis.

The next convention will be held on 8-10 November 2010, at the Harrogate International Centre in Yorkshire.

Entrepreneurship and innovation policy frameworks

I have been invited to participate in a conference organised by UNCTAD in January and in particular to respond to the two presentations in the opening session which will look at the main elements of policy frameworks for entrepreneurship development and science, technology and innovation. I have my own ideas but I would welcome your ideas as well. Let's try and get a debate going. Tell me what you think.

Promoting entrepreneurship: lessons from practitioners

I have pulled together a short note highlighting six areas where policy makers could make a significant difference to the support provided to people starting and growing a business. The recommendations and conclusions have been drawn from comments and inputs at the 2009 convention though, ultimately, it is only me to blame for the content. I would welcome feedback and comment. Sharing Lessons - How business advisers learn

Cobweb Information, together with the International Association for Enterprise Promotion, undertook a survey of business advisers to learn more about current attitudes and approaches to sharing and learning and, in particular, the ways in which advisers share lessons from their own work and learn lessons from the work of others.

Questions touched on whether organisations undertook evaluations of their projects and programmes, whether they published the results, how they sought ideas for new pro… Continue
